I DO NOT CONDONE OR ENCOURAGE THE CONSUMPTION OF ILLEGAL DRUGS. this has been posted for the benefit of characters who abuse drugs. no hate mail, plz.
i feel like i should put my own two cents out there about this sort of stuff. i haven't ever seen stoners/addicts/dealers grossly misplayed, but i figured my ridiculous amount of knowledge in this feild should work for something.
marijuana.!
this is probably the most widely consumed drug in the world. the cannabis plant [or marijuana] grows leaves that contain THC. it is because of THC that when the leaves are dried, and smoked, marijuana has mind-altering effects. experiences wildly vary from person to person, some people will experience paranoia and nervous attacks [though a very small amount], some are high-functioning while high, and others are reduced to giggling puddles on couches.
a feeling of disconnection from reality is standard, and a strange, floating feeling. you will have trouble processing the world, a good way to think of this is a stop-action movie that comes in staggered frames. depending on how affected you are by the drug, you may have the feeling that voices are coming to you from far away, and have difficulty with motor skills.
other side effects include sudden, acute hunger for anything and everything you can get your hands on; a stoner can be one of the most creative chefs you can find. uncontrollable laughter is often experienced, as is sleepiness, drowsiness, adversely restlessness and energy.
weed is used to treat many ailments, both legally and otherwise. it is a potent painkiller, used in some states as a prescription for cancer patients. it is also used [illegally] as an antidepressant and headache remedy, as well as for emotional reasons.
it is nearly impossible to become physically addicted to marijuana. mentally, you feel you may need the drug. you might crave it. but you will never PHYSICALLY be in any danger from withdraw symptoms.
stoners.!
while marijuana is consumed by a large group of people, none of whom prescribe to a single clique or even age group, the most publicized users are referred to as 'stoners'. a stoner is usually defined by someone who smokes weed on a daily basis, and is highly public about their usage. they may wear marijuana-related apparel, be extremely vocal about the legalization of the drug, or simply make it very obvious they smoke.
it is possible to smoke weed fairly regularly, and not be a stoner. as with many cliques and groups, it is based on the perception of whoever is titling the individual.
it's true that most young stoners smoke to look cool. they will give a thousand different reasons, but the most common cause is simply to stick a middle finger in the direction of the establishment, just classic teenage rebellion. usually, those who smoke for this reason will quit after their first few years of college.
lots of people smoke weed! your peers, your teachers, your authority figures have very possibly toked up at some point before. i know at my school, several of my teachers still smoke regularly. even if your character or yourself doesn't partake, generalizations about who does are often misinformed and incorrect.
dealers.!
marijuana is usually dealt using the metric system. grams, ounces, pounds.
low-quality weed can usually be attained for ten dollars a gram.
middle-quality weed can usually be attained for ten-fifteen dollars a gram.
high-quality weed can usually be attained anywhere from fifteen to thirty dollars a gram.
these prices are subject to change, of course, depending on the region or dealer. a gram is usually enough to get two or three people sufficiently high. an ounce is, to the casual or even devoted smoker, is a lot of weed. a pound is more a oh my god did i die and go to heaven amount.
dealers usually use small pocket scales to measure out how much weed you'll be getting, the more social distributors will weigh this in front of you before bagging it up, the quicker [and sketchier] fellows handing you the bag for the money.
dealers talk up their wares. any good drug dealer is a salesman, and it's his [we're going to assume it's a male] job to get you to pay a lot of money for a little plant. he will tell you this is 'good shit, man' and how it will blow your mind. he may even drop a random-sounding name that apparently means something. he is using the placebo effect. carefully inspect what you're buying if you get the chance, don't buy oregano! some dealers will try and sell new smokers oregano, cilantro, or even moss. weed, if unground, will come in clumps called nuggest, with scraps of stem. it may have crystals of THC that are visible. in any case, it's buyer beware, you cannot call the cops.
dealers and buyers get ripped off often. its' a risky business, and it's not uncommon for someone to claim to be in a hurry and remain in their car only to snatch the money and run. there's no guiding light to what to look for in dealers or deals except for word of mouth and your own judgement.

note.!
just a quick little note on not only the effects of weed, but of other drugs and alcohol as well.
substances like drugs and alcohol change the way you think. not just as is convenient to your roleplay. while loss of inhibition can often accompany the consumption of substances, keep in mind it has many other side-effects, and they remain in your system even if you don't want them to be there. it usually takes about two hours for your liver to clean all the alcohol out of your blood, and from one to three hours to come down off of a high. keep that in mind.
